The walls and roof may be slatted to allow for sunlight and ventilation, or they may be solid. 1.) Get two pieces of polyester fleece (it’s really cheap) that are 36 inches by 48 inches. Try to get different patterns with colors in common; it’s like getting two lap-robes in one.
2.) Put the fleece together with wrong sides facing each other, smoothing the wrinkles out. If they don’t square up perfectly, it’s okay, just match them as closely as possible.
3.) Cut all four edges in half-inch strips, cutting four inches deep and making a fringe all the way around.
4.) Pick up one half-inch wide strand and separate the pieces. Tie them together in a square not, and do this all the way around the blanket. It makes a cute chunky cloth fringe.
5.) Take a piece of yarn that’s the same color as one in the blankets and cut it into eight-inch lengths. Cut at least 5, but more are recommended.
6.) With sharp scissors cut 5 very small cuts in the blankets. One in the center and the others halfway between the center and the corners.
7.) Put a crochet hook through the hole and hook the yarn, pulling it through the cloth.
8.) Put a wood bead on the yarn and then string it back through the same hole. The bead will be on one side of the blanket and the yarn will be on the other.
9.) Tie the two pieces of yarn into a bow, securing it with a dot of super glue in the center. Do this for the other holes, too.

Don’t Go Off Road When Driving California’s Hwy 395

Going off road is not recommended for a variety of reasons. The most important one being the damage that can be done in a fragile ecosystem like the desert. Smashing or rolling over clumps of desert vegetation could mean ruining the home or den of a small critter, who just might be hiding from the hot sun underneath. There’s also the vegetation itself to consider, as it may be the only food or moisture source for desert animals. Try to stay close to the road, on the shoulder.

Another reason not to go off road along the 395, is that there are mine shafts all over the place. Remember learning about the California gold rush? Some of those mines are still left, unmarked, just waiting for something to fall inside of them. Never try to go inside a mine shaft, if life is valued; they are very dangerous and cave in easily.

Know the vehicle. If it breaks down, stay with the car and use it for shade and shelter from the weather, and put a colorful piece of clothing or rag on the antenna to alert others that there’s car trouble. Someone will stop to help, but it may take a while, so get comfortable.

There’s a free bicycle parking lot on both sides of the Willamette river. The one on the east side can store 57 bicycles at full capacity, is under shelter and there’s a guard shack right next to it. The one on the west side isn’t quite that big but is just one of several planned in the downtown areas. First see if there are any online specials for airfare or train fare, etc. Many times the website will have deals that the ticket offices don’t. Some hotels give you $25 gas cards if you book with them during certain off-times, and some have winter deals that nobody can afford to leave alone.

Often, local coupons lead to smallish, out-of-the-way restaurants and motels. This is a double-edged sword because they could be greasy spoons and roach traps, or they could be really nice small places that will be returned to for years to come.

Most importantly, nobody wants a break-in to happen, so security is key. Make sure all the windows are not only closed, but locked; even on the second story. If there are no locks installed on the windows it’s easy to make burglar-proof locks.

Most windows slide, either up and down or sideways. Get a wood dowel (rod) and measure the distance between the sliding part of the window and the opposite side of the window sill. Cut the dowel to the length of the measurement and place it in the window. Nobody can open windows locked this way, unless they break them open. This is also an excellent way to lock sliding glass doors.

Affordable Locks

If there’s a doggie door, it needs to be boarded up. The pet isn’t being left home alone for the length of the trip, so why have the door open to anyone who wants to come inside? Our recommendation is to get a piece of plywood that’s six inches bigger than the doggie door. Bolt the wood over the doggie door with the screw heads inside, and that usually will stop anyone. The part of the bolt that sticks outside the door can be cut off with bolt-cutters.

Call the paper carrier and have the paper stopped during vacation; it’s a dead give-away to the public that nobody’s been home for days. Also, go to the post office and have your mail collected there while gone. That way a full box of mail won’t tip off any local burglars looking for work.

Timers are very inexpensive and can save you tons in regards to prevented burglaries. Get one and set your lights to come on half an hour before dark and turn off at the usual bed time. It will look like someone’s home.

These days there isn’t much that doesn’t exist online. Go ahead, type anything – literally, anything – into a Google bar and see how many results return. Even the question, “Do birds think their babies are cute?” got results, try some odd words just for fun and see what comes up.

Pack for the Transportation You Use

Basically what is needed is enough essentials to get through an extra night or two without the checked baggage. If packed correctly, getting through an extra day or two won’t be too bad of an experience and the vacation won’t start off on the wrong foot.

Take it easy, allow lots of time, and pack in a manner that’s helpful.

A lot of people take vacations, but they usually don’t get to take long vacations. Some people are lucky enough to be able to do that, though, and they enjoy going somewhere new for a long period of time, only to come back when they feel like it, stay for a little while, and then leave again. It’s a great life in many ways, but the one problem is that they often want to take a lot of the things that they own along with them. It’s better than trying to own two of everything and securing things when you’re not around to keep an eye on them. Just ship them, enjoy them, and then move them back.

So much of the Yukon Highway goes through dense wilderness that it isn’t always in good repair. With weather and wildlife moving freely throughout the length of it, the highway takes damage that often needs time to find and repair.

Make sure there’s plenty of gas in the car, with an extra can, as there are spots where it’s many miles in between civilization. There have been times when a traveler used all their gasoline trying to get out of a snowy spot.

Go prepared to get stranded. Keep blankets in the car – enough for everyone to have their own. These can be a blessing if someone is stuck in the snow.

You Can’t Travel Without Traction

Traction devices are very, very important. On the Yukon Highway a driver can run into sunshine with dry roads, and icy white-outs within a mile of each other. Chains are the very best for traction on ice, while studded tires may help with snow and rain.

Keep a large bag of kitty litter and two boards in the trunk. That way, if there’s ever a time when the car won’t go because of snow or mud, the kitty litter can be used for traction and the boards can provide a way to drive out of the situation.

Cell phone service isn’t always accessible along the Yukon Highway. It’s still recommended to take a phone along because there are spots where service can be received. Otherwise, if help is needed, put the hood up and place a colorful piece of cloth or clothing on the antenna to alert others that help is needed.

Stay with the vehicle and don’t start walking. Hypothermia is a very real and present danger year-round in the Yukon.

It used to be a college degree was enough to qualify you for thousands of great jobs at top corporations across America. However, that is no longer the case. As competition for positions increase, the need for higher degrees is increasing as well.
